Within The Other

Large river stones full of shifting hues are inset into the top of totem like figures and appear to be simultaneously molded into and emerging out of the wood itself. Intriguing textures are intermixed with suggestive anatomical forms carved into the pieces, some male, some female, and in some instances both. I intentionally chose the totem form, imbued with all its spiritual overtones and rich with symbolism, as a vehicle to explore the concept of duality.  A group of these sculptures assembled in a single exhibit hall creates a compelling atmosphere.
